Boracay Water integrates used water in process chain

MANILA, Philippines - Boracay Water recently commissioned a water reuse project proving that treated wastewater effluent can actually be reused and integrated in the process chain.

The premier water and wastewater operator on the island recently converted to effluent wastewater instead of potable water in cleaning the dewatering facility and water spraying of clarifiers and aeration tanks of its sewerage treatment plant in Barangay Balabag.

The environmentally compliant effluent is now being used in the day-to-day operations of the treatment plant.

The technology was first conceptualized in mid-2012 to explore how used water can be reused. The P757,000-facility stands as a proof of Boracay Water’s innovation. The technology does not just make the operations more efficient but also cuts down on operating costs.

In 2010, the Tourism and Infrastructure Enterprise Zone Authority, formerly the Philippine Tourism Authority, partnered with Manila Water to improve the water system and address the wastewater problems of Boracay.

Over the past two years, Boracay Water has upgraded the island’s sewage treatment plant and ensured that the treated wastewater being flushed back into the coastal waters complies with the strict standards set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
