Novartis helps raise public awareness on lung health

MANILA, Philippines - In observance of World Spirometry Day last June 27 and World COPD Day yesterday, Novartis Healthcare Philippines and the Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP) have signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to raise public awareness on lung health and provide local physicians with continuing medical education on the diagnosis and management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

“Research reveals low public awareness on lung health and underutilization and/or ineffective use of the lung function test or spirometry, a simple test that can be used for the routine diagnosis and monitoring of patients with respiratory diseases, such as asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis and COPD. Our society’s partnership with Novartis aims to address these issues,” said PCCP president Dr. Benilda Galvez. “Novartis is privileged to work with the PCCP in raising public awareness on respiratory health and enhancing local physicians’ knowledge and skills in pulmonary medicine,” said Thomas Weigold, country president and managing director of Novartis Healthcare Philippines.

World Spirometry Day aims to raise awareness on lung health and respiratory disease surveillance by promoting spirometry.

World COPD Day is a global effort to expand understanding of COPD and advocate for better care for patients.

In 2004, 64 million people were suffering from COPD; by 2030, the World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that the disease will become the third leading cause of death worldwide.

Key risk factors for COPD are tobacco smoking, indoor and outdoor air pollution, and exposure to occupational dusts and chemicals.

Previously described as chronic bronchitis and emphysema, COPD causes gradual restriction of airflow and consequent difficulty in breathing.

Shortness of breath, cough and sputum production are common symptoms. Although these symptoms can be effectively managed, the weakening of the lungs caused by COPD is not fully reversible.

Under the MOA the PCCP, through its local chapters across the archipelago, in partnership with Novartis, will develop a module for local physicians on the updated guidelines on COPD diagnosis, management and prevention; conduct workshops for local physicians; conduct spirometry screening for qualified patients; hold lay forums; form COPD patient support groups; produce and distribute COPD awareness flyers in Tagalog, Ilonggo and Cebuano; and stimulate local research on COPD.
