Smart makes rainfall monitoring fun

-

MANILA, Philippines -  Public schools participating in Project Rain Gauge of Smart Communications Inc. recently displayed their creative side when they came up with unique and attractive designs for the standard rain gauges they are using to regularly monitor rainfall.

Smart issued the challenge to school partners not only to sustain interest in the project, which engages them in the daily collection, recording and sending of rainfall data to a website (www.projectraingauge.ph), but also to help maintain their rain gauges.

Some of the rain gauges, deployed since 2007, have started showing the wear and tear of exposure to the elements.

The designs of Baguio City National High School-Main, Passi National High School and San Juan National High School stood out from among the entries received from public schools nationwide. The winning teams will receive premium items like flash disks, laptop bags and school supplies from Smart.

Project Rain Gauge was launched in 2007 initially as a science education project. The vision, however, is to eventually create a network of supplementary ground stations across the country to provide additional data on local rainfall measurement in specific areas for a more effective and accurate local weather monitoring.
