Pediatric neurology seminar-workshop slated

MANILA, Philippines – The Pediatric Neurology Section of the Department of Pediatrics and Department of Neurosciences of the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) is organizing an interactive seminar and workshop entitled “Pediatric Neurology Made Simple” on July 29-30 at the UPMASA Science Hall at PGH.

The whole-day interactive sessions will review the basics of neurology among physicians of varied specializations.

It will include discussions on common neurological disorders in children such as headaches, epilepsy, CNS infections and developmental delays.

The sessions will be facilitated by notable child neurologists such as Dr. Aida Salonga, Dr. Marissa Lukban, Dr. Benilda Sanchez-Gan, Dr. Marilyn Tan, Dr. Martha Bolanos, Dr. Bernadette Terencio, Dr. Jo Janette de la Calzada, Dr. Kristine Mendoza, and Dr. Bernadette Macrohon.

During the half-day workshop, the participants will undergo relevant skills training in the performance of a pediatric neurological examination and lumbar puncture, and interpretation of cerebrospinal fluid and neuroimaging studies of common neurological conditions seen in children.

“Our basic neurology course is unique compared to seminars in child neurology offered in the past because instead of the usual lecture type seminars, everything will be conducted in an interactive manner to encourage audience participation,” says Lukban, one of the organizers of the course.

This basic neurology course aims to provide useful knowledge to doctors, specifically pediatricians and general practitioners, in dealing with patients who may have neurological problems, before referring them to a pediatric neurologist. In this way, improved health care will be provided by the primary care physicians.

“We’re expecting around 200 participants in the course. If the course proves useful to the participants, we’re planning to offer the course at least every other year,” says Lukban.

On-site registration fees are P1,500 (with workshop) and P1,000 (without workshop). The course is accredited with 9.75 PPS, 24 PMA and 75 PAFP credit units.
