DOST, CERN sign agreement
MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) have signed an expression of interest for future plans, including the DOST’s participation in front-line high-energy physics experiments.
The Philippine embassy in Berne, Switzerland reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that DOST Secretary Estrella Alabastro and CERN director-general Rolf Dieter Heurer signed the expression of interest.
The signing was witnessed by Philippine Ambassador to Switzerland Ma. Theresa Lazaro and Dr. Alumanda de la Rosa, director of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI).
CERN was represented by director Dr. Emmanuel Tsesmelis and Dr. Albert de Roeck.
CERN is the world’s largest particle physics laboratory based in Geneva, Switzerland. Its main function is to provide the particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high-energy physics research.
Founded in 1954, CERN is also noted for being the birthplace of the World Wide Web.
CERN plans to provide a research program for Filipino students to compete their post-graduate, doctoral and post-doctorate education through Master’s and Ph.D. degrees pursued in European universities.
