The grant was received by the Ateneo School of Government from the Canada-based International Development Research Center (IDRC) for the project dubbed “Science and Technology Innovations for the Base of the Pyramid in
Science and Technology Undersecretary Fortunato de la Peña said the project aims to raise awareness among policymakers and the private sector on the needs of the poor and the role that S&T can play in addressing them.

Aside from representing the Department of Science and Technology as partner agency, De la Peña also chairs the Project Advisory Committee for its first year of implementation.
“In other words, our S&T policies will be designed to benefit the poor,” he said. “The overall approach is to link the BoP (Base of the Pyramid) movement to national policy frameworks, thereby contributing to the creation of an enabling environment to spur S&T innovations for the poor.”

The Ateneo School of Government will prepare a research agenda that includes documentation of BoP innovations, analysis of the conditions that facilitate the development and marketing of these innovations and proposing effective policies for promoting pro-poor innovations, De la Peña said.
The project will also award grants to qualified institutions and innovators to conduct studies consistent with the project framework and research agenda, he added.
