RP has 6 entries in ISEF

The Philippine has six official entries in the 54th International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) to be held in Cleveland, Ohio, USA next month.

The entries – four individual and two team science projects – were among the 24 national winners in the recently concluded Intel Philippine Science Fair (IPSF) 2002-2003 organized by Intel Phils., the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute and Department of Education.

The projects’ researchers come from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) in Diliman, Quezon City; Agusan del Sur National High School (ADSNHS) in Agusan del Sur; Cagayan National High School (CNHS) in Tuguegarao City; and Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in Iligan City.

The entries for the individual category are:

• Wonder Drug: A Broad Spectrum Bioactive Substance Obtained from Sibukao Tree – Eigen Israel Rara, MSU-IIT Integrated Development School.

• Anti-bacterial Agent Obtained from the Midgut of Cattle Leeches – Efrellene Galula, ADSNHS.

• The Biological Remote Thermometer and Sensor: Its Past, Present, and Future – McAllen Reonel Cacacho, CNHS.

• SMS Link-Interactive: Secured Data Transmission and Modification through SMS – Roy Vincente Canceco, PSHS.

The entries for the team category are:

• Anti-Neurotoxic Effect of Cobra Vine Seeds: A Potential Therapy for Snake Bites – Eunice Aparente, Auris Kimmy Bureros and Shaira Nadine Gegato, Bayugan National High School, Agusan del Sur.

• Ectomycorrhizal Inoculation of Anisoptera thurifera and Shorea guiso in Philippine Soil: Growth and Phosphorus Dynamics – Jenny Aggangan, Cheryll Anne Limos and Joy Charisse Bulan, PSHS.

Last year’s Philippine delegates to the ISEF held in Louisville, Kentucky, won two major awards – first prize in Physics in the team category, and second prize in Microbiology in the individual category.

Dr. Josette Biyo of PSHS-West Visayas campus in Iloilo City won the Intel Excellence in Teaching Award, the most prestigious prize for science research advisers given in the ISEF.
