CEF offers livelihood training programs

MANILA, Philippines - The Culinary Education Foundation (CEF), the social arm of the Cravings Group of Companies, takes a “greener” step by promoting that a zero-waste lifestyle is not only a way of life, but can also boost income and aid in the livelihood of people especially in times of economic crisis.

The CEF is currently conducting livelihood seminars that offer tips on recycling programs that promote unique and modern ways of starting one’s own business – using the greener approach.

The training programs, which began last August at the Kaingin Ecology Center in Barangay Pansol, Kaingin 1, runs every Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 12 noon until October 2009. All courses are scheduled at weekly intervals.

There are various courses being offered. One of courses is “Handmade Paper Making”, a three-hour hands-on workshop tackling ways how to creatively and eco-consciously recycle paper. “Organic Vegetable and Herb Gardening” will also be part of the program. Participants will be given a crash course on starting their own organic vegetable and herb garden.

Another exciting course is the “Soap and Detergent Production”. Moms or budding entrepreneurs looking for a viable business venture should consider attending this program.

Next on the list is the “Organic Vinegar Production.” Learn and realize the economic and health benefits of organic vinegar (an indispensable culinary staple) with guaranteed recovery at about 95 percent and return of investment (ROI) of at least 50 percent.

A more challenging yet otherwise promising venture is “Vermiculture”. Key speakers are expert vermiculturists, Tony and Beth de Castro. They will tackle what’s considered the greatest organic farmer on earth – the earthworm, also known as “earth angels.”

Special courses, by arrangement, are also offered. These include the “Green Chefmanship” where you will learn the basics of greening the kitchen and reducing the chef’s carbon footprint. This special program is perfect for those who are in the restaurant or hospitality industry. A minimum of 15 participants will be accepted for this subject.

The “Vermiculture” seminar, to be conducted also by Tony and Beth de Castro, can also be availed under a special arrangement with a minimum of 15 participants. Add to that, a free “Home Composting Lesson” will also be held at the Kaingin Ecology Center every day until October (except Sundays) from 4 p.m to 5 p.m. Just look for Arturo Yucor.
