And now, ‘garlic ice cream’

Ever heard of "garlic ice cream"?

It’s another novelty product developed by the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), a multi-campus institution of higher learning in Ilocos Norte.

The study on the garlic-flavored ice cream has been pursued for "healthful" reasons.

As Yolanda Pammit of the MMSU College of Agriculture-Department of Home Technology reported, garlic has been said to cure common colds, high blood pressures, high fever, rheumatism, tuberculosis, wounds, respiratory problems, toothaches, snakebites, whopping cough, baldness, and works at aphrodisiac.

"The addition of garlic to ice cream may prove good and healthful to those who may be suffering from ailments that garlic can cure," Pammit said.

MMSU, currently headed by Dr. Saturnino Ocampo Jr., president, has whipped up the recipe and procedure in making garlic ice cream, which is exciting the interest of people within the university‘s service area.

The ingredients are garlic powder, milk fat, nonfat milk, sweetener, stabilizer, emulsifier, water, and other flavorings.

MMSU food technologists had earlier developed "malunggay ice cream", which has also generated interest among people in Ilocos Norte and nearby places.

"Malunggay", a plant that easily grows in backyards, has been known as rich in food nutrients necessary for a healthful living. Rudy A. Fernandez
