ICTSI’s Croatia unit hits 4 million TEUs milestone
MANILA, Philippines — The Croatian unit of International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) has handled four million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to date, reaching a new milestone after completing its latest upgrades.
The Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT) yesterday said it has managed four million TEUs since becoming part of the ICTSI Group in 2011.
The milestone came five years after AGCT breached the two-million mark, showing its ability to grow faster after completing equipment upgrades.
In 2025, AGCT wrapped up a $40-million program that added two quay cranes for docking post-Panamax vessels, some of the world’s largest. The investment also funded the addition of two hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes at AGCT.
The upgrades increased yard capacity and reduced fuel consumption. AGCT is also replacing diesel-powered tractors with electric units.
ICTSI senior vice president and regional head for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Hans-Ole Madsen said AGCT is proving its role as one of the most important Adriatic gateways.
“Over the past 15 years, the terminal has become an increasingly important link between global shipping networks and inland markets across central and southeast Europe,” Madsen said.
Madsen also said most cargo movements in AGCT move through rail and road links to hinterland markets such as Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Serbia and Slovakia.
The milestone also coincides with AGCT’s 15th year with ICTSI. The company has invested in infrastructure upgrades and new equipment since taking over the terminal in 2011.
AGCT CEO Iñigo Nuñez Mendibe said the milestone shows the important role ICTSI has played in the terminal’s development. From here on, the goal is to keep on improving AGCT, given that ICTSI still has 15 years left in its concession.
“This development reflects the commitment of our employees, the confidence of our customers and the partnerships we have built across the Port of Rijeka community,” Mendibe said.
ICTSI signed a 30-year partnership with Luka Rijeka D.D. for the operations and maintenance of AGCT at the Port of Rijeka, Croatia’s main port.
