Government agencies required to be energy efficient

Solar rooftop installation a priority
MANILA, Philippines — All government agencies nationwide are now mandated to prioritize solar power installations and utilize energy-efficiency products to cut electricity consumption amid growing demand.
The Inter-Agency Energy Efficiency and Conservation Committee (IAEECC), chaired by the Department of Energy (DOE), has adopted a resolution directing all public offices to adhere to the minimum energy performance standards (MEPS).
The landmark directive aims to minimize energy use in the public sector and support the country’s transition to cleaner technologies as part of the government energy management program (GEMP).
“Every peso the government saves on electricity is a peso we can redirect to vital services for our people,” Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said.
“This is more than compliance; it’s a statement of our firm resolve to build a cleaner, smarter and more sustainable Philippines starting with the government,” she added.
MEPS establishes the baseline efficiency levels that appliances and equipment must meet before they can be used or sold.
Through the Philippine energy labeling program, MEPS ensures that government agencies procure only compliant, energy-efficient products.
“By requiring energy-efficient products and prioritizing solar rooftops, we are not only reducing costs but also setting an example for every household, business and community,” Garin said.
Beyond national agencies, the DOE said the IAEECC is evaluating a joint memorandum circular for the creation of dedicated energy efficiency and conservation offices in local government units (LGUs).
The move seeks to empower LGUs to craft customized energy-saving programs and give communities more control over their consumption.
In an earlier interview, Energy Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella said the government was looking to secure around P2 billion in financing starting next year for the GEMP implementation.
Under the GEMP, the government-wide electricity and fuel consumption are targeted to be reduced by at least 10 percent through strategic energy efficiency and conservation measures.
