MANILA, Philippines — The official distributor and importer of BMW cars in the Philippines is aiming to achieve higher vehicle sales this year with the launch of the new generation of its best-selling vehicle model, the X3.

Spencer Yu, president at SMC Asia Car Distributors Corp. (SMCACDC), said in an interview during the launch of the all-new X3 that the goal this year is to beat last year’s sales.

SMCACDC sold a total of 815 units in 2024, down by 28.8 percent from 1,144 units in 2023.

“The market is still very volatile at the moment, especially in the premium segment. A lot of different factors are coming in. A lot of players are coming in,” Yu said.

SMCACDC, however, has a positive outlook on the sales performance of the all-new X3 as the previous generation has been received well in the market.

He said the previous generation delivered close to 1,200 units.

“This is one of our top sellers and the Filipino motorists are really very big fans of the X3. The X3 has always been a very, very successful model in the Philippine market,” he said.

The all-new X3 30e xDrive M Sport is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, available at a price tag of P4.79 million.

Through the new X3, Yu said the company wants to offer a good value product that would allow Filipino motorists to have a good driving experience and fuel efficiency.

With more new energy vehicles coming into the market, he said consumer education would be important in driving the adoption of these vehicles.

“I think the most important thing beyond the product substance, beyond the price is consumer education,” he said, noting this would help guide purchases.

He also said infrastructure is key to encouraging the use of electric vehicles.

He said every BMW electric vehicle sold comes with a portable charger.

In addition, the company is installing chargers in the country, where it has so far deployed 22.
