Business

From setbacks to success

BUSINESS MATTERS (BEYOND THE BOTTOM LINE) - Francis J. Kong - The Philippine Star

One businessman lamented: “I’m a walking economy?” “How so?” asked his friend. The businessman replied, “My hairline is in recession, my stomach is always in inflation, and these two together bring me into a deep depression.”

Another said, “My business is always up and down at every moment.” His friend didn’t understand what he meant, so he asked, “Why and how?” And the businessman said, “I sell yo-yos.”

As businesspeople or decision-makers, we all have our share of failures, right? Setbacks are inevitable.

Even the most brilliant ideas can stumble when confronted with the complexities of the real world.

The question, therefore, is not whether we will fail or not. The question for business leaders and decision-makers is how do we deal with failure, recover from it, and succeed through it?

Harvard professor Jeff Karp illuminates the transformative power of failure, urging individuals to embrace setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning.

In various domains, individuals often encounter situations where their ideas lack the necessary support or fail to address practical considerations.

Whether launching a startup or pursuing a novel research endeavor, the road to success is fraught with challenges.

When setbacks occur, it is natural to feel disheartened and emotionally attached to our ideas. However, Karp emphasizes the importance of resilience and extracting valuable insights from failure. By adopting a mindset of continuous improvement and leveraging setbacks as learning opportunities, individuals can enhance their chances of success in future endeavors.

Karp outlines four key principles for navigating the journey of failure and growth:

1. Failure plus forward motion

Embrace failure as a stepping stone to progress, provided there is a structured process for absorbing insights and evolving strategies. Individuals can avoid stagnation and missed opportunities with a proactive approach to learning and adaptation.

2. Learning from others

While learning from the experiences of others is invaluable, it’s essential to recognize the importance of personal experimentation and adaptation. Each individual possesses unique strengths and preferences, and finding the right approach requires self-awareness and experimentation.

3. Creativity in adversity

When faced with challenges, transitioning to a creative mindset can unlock new possibilities for progress. Individuals can reignite their energy and momentum by identifying insights gleaned from setbacks and embracing incremental progress.

4. Constructive failure

Embrace failure as a catalyst for growth and innovation.

I used to be in the garment manufacturing business. The only way I could compete against the more prominent players was to center on rapid design creation and innovation.

Of the 10 or eight designs I introduced to the market, only about two or three would succeed. But the success of the few is more than enough to compensate for the failed ones and bring in an acceptable degree of profit.

Rather than dwelling on setbacks, I focused on understanding why certain designs failed, using that knowledge to fuel the creation of innovations and products. This approach increased the likelihood of success in future endeavors.

The setbacks paved the way for breakthroughs. As basketball legend Michael Jordan famously stated, “To learn to succeed, you must first learn to fail.” By reframing failure as a natural part of the learning process, individuals can cultivate resilience and drive meaningful progress.

Reframing setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning, individuals can unlock their full potential and navigate the complexities of innovation with confidence and resilience. Karp aptly summarizes, “Embrace failure as a problem-solving tool, aim for quicker rebounds, and create a culture that fosters creativity and collaboration. Reflect on past failures, learn from them, and let them propel you on your journey to success.”

As the timeless adage goes, “Success is a journey, not a destination.” Drawing from my past and present business endeavors, I’ve learned that managing failures effectively paves the way for continuous growth and excellence. And as the author Brianna Weist would say, “The breakdown may pave the way for a breakthrough.”
