MANILA, Philippines — FedEx Express has further expanded its delivery choices of customers and enterprises in the Philippines after installing self-collection closets at the Light Rail Transit Line 1.

The courier giant is giving its customers an additional option for receiving packages by installing lockers in LRT-1 stations where they can collect their deliveries.

FedEx said buyers may avail of this option at no extra cost, believing that this service will contribute to further boosting e-commerce activities in the Philippines.

FedEx Philippines managing director Maribeth Espinosa said self-collection services would benefit consumers who want to control the location and time for receiving deliveries.

Usually, customers list their home addresses as the delivery point for their online purchases.

With the addition of self-collection closets, customers may opt to get their packages in an LRT-1 station most convenient to them.

The LRT-1 hosts a total of 20 stations and crosses four cities in Metro Manila, namely, Pasay, Manila, Quezon City and Caloocan.

Espinosa said each self-collection point contains 66 closets available for package storage.

“The introduction of our self-collection service at the LRT stations will bring significant benefits to customers, allowing them to decide how they want to receive their packages,” Espinosa said.

“Offering great flexibility and choice is particularly important (in) the fast-growing e-commerce market,” she added.

Based on estimates from GlobalData, FedEx said the e-commerce market in the Philippines is seen growing by 23 percent to reach $12.1 billion in 2023.

Last year the sector expanded by 31 percent to hit $9.8 billion, gaining from the consumer shift for electronic purchases.

In the face of this changing behavior, customers are also asking couriers to broaden their options for delivery.

In turn, couriers such as FedEx are compelled to expand their services, anxious that unsatisfactory transactions may turn off some of their clients.

Recently, FedEx enhanced its network of touchpoints in the Philippines, growing it to more than 1,100 to give customers additional branches where shipments can be dropped off.

The subsidiary of FedEx Corp. serves as one of the largest express couriers in the globe with a reach of 220 countries and territories worldwide through land and air.
