Citi employees volunteer for Global Community Day

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Citi employees in the Philippines will unite with thousands of colleagues across 90 countries and territories this month to volunteer at service projects that support a range of community needs.

Now in its 14th year, Global Community Day is an important tradition at Citi because it gives employees the opportunity to make a positive difference in people’s lives, and to connect with the communities where it operates.

Around 7,000 Citi Philippines employees will be participate in 23 events over five weekends in June, in collaboration with nine community partners and non-government organizations.  This is the highest number of volunteers to participate in the Philippines as employees respond enthusiastically at the chance to help their communities.

“Global Community Day is an important tradition for Citi and I’m proud of how we have rallied together as a team to give others a helping hand,” Citi Philippines chief executive officer Aftab Ahmed said.

“We harness the spirit of giving back as a Citi volunteer team. Through our combined efforts, we are playing a constructive where we live and work,” he said.

This year, Citi Philippines collaborated with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), ChildHope Asia Philippines, Gawad Kalinga, World Vision Development Foundation, Philippines without Orphans, GMA Kapuso Foundation, Bayan Academy, Philippine Accessible Disability Services and the Philippine Paralympic Committee.

In partnership with PBSP, one of the country’s oldest corporate-led social development foundations, around 400 Citi volunteers repainted 1,000 classroom desks and chairs in EM’s Signal Village Elementary School in Taguig City under the ‘Brigada Eskwela’ campaign of preparing underprivileged public schools for the school opening this month. Citi employees also made 2,000 Ecobrick bottles out of non-biodegradable plastic materials, which will be used as building blocks for housing and school projects.

One of the highlights of Global Community Day will be the “Lakad Para Atleta” by Citi employees alongside the Philippine Paralympic Committee and its supporters on June 22 at the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Science Oval to raise awareness for people with disabilities and to support the values of inclusion and equality. The walk also aims to raise funds to help Filipino paralympic athletes prepare for the 10th ASEAN Paralympic Games.
