HSBC, Tesda ink deal on trainors

MANILA, Philippines – HSBC Philippines, a unit of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp., has partnered with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) to enhance the competencies of technical vocational trainors.

HSBC Philippines has signed a memorandum of agreement with Tesda to implement the “Enhanced TM Level one Program.”

Tesda director general Irene Isaac said trainers are heading back to the classroom as trainees to upgrade their teaching skills and their competencies as training facilitators.

“Being at the forefront of tech-vocational education, trainers should be able to facilitate learning among diverse types of learners in various environments and using a wide range of skills and knowledge,” Isaac said.

“Hopefully, through this training, our trainers can keep pace with the demands of global competitiveness,” she also said.

Tesda manages technical vocational (tech-voc) education and training in the country. It supervises over 4,600 training institutions and ensures that their trainers are qualified and competent to deliver tech-voc to their trainees. Currently, there are more than 9,000 Tesda-certified trainers with the National TVET Trainer Certificates (NTTC).

HSBC Global Service Centre president and director Taha Mohamedali, meanwhile, stressed the importance of technical and vocational training as it equips our people to hone their competencies.

“I am happy that we are able to support this national initiative,” the HSBC official said.

Under the agreement with HSBC Philippines, the Tesda trainers would go through an intensive upgrading training on Basic and Core Competencies.

HSBC Electronic Data Processing Philippines (HDPP) would undertake the training of the trainers in its premises.

Topics include ground rules for giving feedback; passion generators; learning experience versus training experience; learning styles; adult learning principles; training methodologies; handling difficult learners; and, coaching among others.

In April 2015, HSBC sponsored the first batch of training and produced 12 graduates who were carefully selected from TESDA’s training institutions in 10 regions.

The program aims to train 120 tech-voc trainers. These trainers would then do multiplier training among trainers from various public and private institutions across the country.
