Retailers urge change in mall operating hours

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Retailers Association (PRA) has called upon its members – malls and retailers – to support the efforts to alleviate traffic in Metro Manila by adjusting mall operating hours. The suggestion is for malls to open at 11 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. instead of their present 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. operating schedule.

PRA president and Duty Free Philippines COO Lorenzo C. Formoso explains that “by moving the mall operating hours at a later time, retailers will not be competing with the offices’ and schools’ rush hour; this way, we can help decrease the volume of cars on the road.”

The worsening traffic condition in the city has been taking its toll on Filipinos who have to endure the long hours of travel daily to work and home. This has also started to affect the schedule and performances of businesses as employees report to work late and meetings and deadlines are not duly met.

“Also, by operating at a later schedule, people going home from work can have ample time to shop.” PRA chairman emeritus and BLIMS Lifestyle Group chairman Samie Lim adds.

PRA’s initiative to help ease the traffic congestion in Manila is supported by its members.

“Every single effort we can do to help ease traffic in our city will go a long way towards creating a smoother travel for all.” Formoso stressed.

PRA is the recognized organization of retailers and suppliers to the retail industry in the country.
