Damage to fisheries seen at P806,000
MANILA, Philippines - Damage caused by typhoon Helen to fisheries was placed at P806,000 as of yesterday, according to the preliminary report of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
The bureau reported that fish pond and fish cage operators in Ilocos Region suffered losses of P780,000 in bangus and tilapia stocks as well as P26,000 worth of damage to fishery equipment because of flooding when Typhoon Helen hit the region on Aug. 14.
BFAR Region 1 director Nestor Domenden reported that at least 113 fish operators were affected, 102 in Pinili, Ilocos Norte and 11 in Magsingal, Ilocos Sur and Sto. Tomas in La Union
Aside from the fingerlings that escaped from fish cages and damaged dikes, 7.5 tons of selling size tilapia was also lost during the storm.
BFAR director Asis Perez said he had instructed all hatcheries operated by BFAR regional offices not affected by the typhoons to reserve bangus and tilapia fry for distribution to affected fish operators once the weather condition becomes favorable for grow-out.
