Veggie prices down

Manila, Philippines - Divisoria is now swamped with excess vegetable produce, causing prices to drop steeply.

Data from the Bureau of Agriculture Statistics (BAS) showed that unloadings of vegetable at Divisoria and Balintawak markets have started to become heavier than usual beginning last week, allowing for price reductions from the previous week by as much as P3 per kilogram for habitchuelas, P4 for pechay Baguio, P3.35 for tomato; P5 for eggplant; and P8 for carrots.

At the fruit stands, prices were stable because of sufficient supply of fruits in season as well as the imported ones.

Agriculture assistant secretary Dante Delima said there is also oversupply of squash, string beans, cabbage, carrots, and labanos.

He said the oversupply was caused by the lack of cropping coordination among farmers.
