Tetangco cited among world's best central bankers

- Lawrence Agcaoili -

MANILA, Philippines - New York-based publication Global Finance has given Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. an “A” grade and has been included in its list of the World’s Best Central Bankers over the past year.

Tetangco was given an “A” grade along with Glenn Stevens of Australia, Stanley Fischer of Israel, Riad Salameh of Lebanon, Zeti Akhtar Aziz of Malaysia and Fai-Nan Perng of Taiwan.

Tetangco’s “A” grade for 2011 was an improvement of the “B” grades he received from the magazine in 2010, 2009 and 2008. This is also the third time in his tenure as BSP governor that Tetangco received an “A” grade. He received the highest grade in 2007 and 2006.

Global Finance has published annually the “Central Banker Report Card” feature since 1994 wherein it grades central bank governors of 36 key countries and the European Central Bank on an “A” to “F” scale for success in areas such as inflation control, economic growth goals, currency stability and interest rate management.

An “A” grade represents an excellent performance, down through “F” grade for outright failure.

Tetangco made history as the first BSP governor to be reappointed for a second six-year term. He assumed office as BSP governor in July 2005 after occupying different positions in the organization in a span of over three decades.

Prior to his stint as BSP chief, Tetangco served as deputy governor in-charge of the Banking Services Sector, Economic Research and Treasury.

As BSP chief, Tetangco is also the chairman of the Monetary Board, Anti-Money Laundering Council and Philippine  International Convention Center; vice-chairman of the Agriculture Credit Policy Council; member of the Capital Market Development Council , Export Development Council, PhilExport Board of Trustees, Philippine Export-Import Credit Agency; and director of PDIC, National Development Council, and National Home Mortgage Finance Corp.

He also represents the country in various international and regional organizations, including the Executive Meeting of East Asia and Pacific Central Banks; ASEAN and ASEAN+3; South East Asia Central Banks; South East Asia, New Zealand and Australia ; Center for Latin American Monetary Studies; and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation.

He is the governor for the Philippines in the International Monetary Fund and the Alternate Governor in the World Bank and in the Asian Development Bank.

Tetangco took up AB Economics at the Ateneo de Manila University where he graduated cum laude. He took up graduate courses in business administration in the same institution. As a central bank scholar, he took up his MA in Public Policy and Administration (concentration in Development Economics) at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, USA.

Global Finance publisher Joseph Giarraputo said the magazine evaluates the determination of central bankers every year to stand up to political interference, and their efforts at influencing their governments on such issues as spending and economic openness to foreign investment and financial services.

“During one of the toughest years on record, the world’s central bankers were tested as never before,” Giarraputo stressed.
