US funds counterterrorism training facilities in Zamboanga
MANILA, Philippines — The United States will provide P30.8 million for the establishment of permanent counter-terrorism training facilities in Pagadian, Zamboanga del Sur.
This developed after the US embassy and the provincial government signed an agreement to establish law enforcement training programs in the province.
The embassy said the agreement shows the US commitment to working with the Philippines to deter terror threats.
Under the agreement, the facilities will host specialized training courses for members of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
“This investment in Pagadian reflects our confidence in the PNP and our conviction that a safer, more capable PNP means a safer Philippines, a safer United States and a stronger alliance between our nations,” embassy acting senior regional security officer Daniel Art said.
Since 2006, the US has facilitated counterterrorism courses to more than 10,000 police officers, improving their capabilities to investigate, respond to, and mitigate terror threats and incidents.
Up to 2,000 police officers and other law enforcement personnel are expected to train at the facilities in Pagadian every year.
