PNP probes fake mugshots in vlogger’s slay case

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is investigating the circulation on social media platforms of allegedly altered images of the mugshots of the suspects in the murder of pro-Marcos vlogger Alicia Lipata.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has ordered the probe to find out who are the people behind the proliferation of the fake photographs.

The PNP has been mum on the identities of the suspects who were arrested in Mabalacat City, Pampanga last week.

The suspects’ supposed images circulated online.

Nartatez clarified that the police did not officially release the unblurred mugshots, which he said contained altered facial features and dates that do not match with the official booking photographs.

Nartatez said the PNP strictly observes established protocols to ensure that all official releases are lawful, accurate, verified and consistent with due process.

He urged the public to rely only on official sources and verified updates for information.

“The PNP will continue to provide updates while ensuring the integrity of the investigation and the observance of due process,” Nartatez said.

Lipata, also known as Mima Alicia, was shot dead in front of her house in Barangay 171, Caloocan City. Her partner was wounded.

Police are investigating if Lipata’s murder was related to her job as a political vlogger.
