CEBU, Philippines —  Police are investigating the death of a 71-year-old street dweller who was found on a sidewalk in Barangay Pari-an, Cebu City on Wednesday morning, July 8. Initial findings point to natural causes pending the results of an autopsy.

The victim was identified as Pablito Castillo Abella, who had reportedly been staying at the corner of Sikatuna and Bonifacio streets in Barangay Day-as.

According to the Pari-an Police Station, officers responded to a call for assistance at around 6:50 a.m. after residents reported a foul odor coming from a man lying on the sidewalk. Upon arrival, police found Abella already dead.

Patrolman Ronel Alqueza said investigators found no visible injuries or signs of foul play during their initial examination of the body. He added that an autopsy had been requested to determine the exact cause of death.

Police also learned that Abella was last seen alive shortly after midnight. A tenant of a nearby building reportedly saw him sleeping on the sidewalk and noticed that he was still making slight movements at the time.

Residents familiar with Abella told investigators that he had been staying in the area for some time and was often seen roaming around the neighborhood. They also said he regularly consumed alcoholic drinks, often without eating.

Abella’s remains were brought to a funeral home along N. Bacalso Avenue, where an autopsy will be conducted.

As of Thursday, authorities had yet to locate and notify the victim’s relatives. (CEBU NEWS)
