New player Star SineMax enters streaming landscape

MANILA, Philippines — A streaming platform usually carries a collection of films, reality TV, special presentations (like awards shows and concerts), TV series and travelogues. But Star SineMax, as its name suggests, focuses on movies.
The phrase “fearless cinema” was included in some of its promotional materials during its grand launch. Perhaps the description means coming up with something new and finding its own niche market.
“Dun na tayo papunta, eh (that’s the trend and path we’re heading to),” said Ery Gushi, president and CEO of Star SineMax, in a recent brief group chat. “We have short films and we have full-length (ones).”
As for the genres, it’s going to present a variety, encompassing comedy and drama.
“Wala pa tayong action, pero magkakaroon po tayo (we haven’t done action yet, but we’ll also have it),” shared she. “Sana adventure maka-gawa rin kami siyempre (and of course, we hope to do adventure).”
Also on the wish list is a musical genre.
“(Pero) dahan, dahan lang sana po para maganda ang maging quality (but we’ll do it gradually to assure the quality of the film),” said Ery.
From its publicity team, the following titles the streaming platform will offer are “Tubero,” “Dalisay,” “Piring,” “Sadista,” “Lihim ni Fiona,” “Sariwa,” “Liwaliw,” “Hayok” and “Humaling;” “My Guardian Baby,” “Haunted Bride,” “Justice of Love,” “Oni,” “Kiss of An Angel,” “Budoleras,” “The Invitation,” “Worlds Apart” and “Mudra Bampira;” “White Prince,” “Shared Moments,” “The Sign,” “Stepmother,” “GL Forever,” “Ari and Janna,” “The Gap,” “Portrait of Us” and “By Some Miracle.”
They are classified into sexy and mature, wholesome general audience and LGBT film content, theme- and audience-wise.
Among them, “Portrait of Us” and “My Guardian Baby” are now streaming.
“I’m proud to say that we’re focusing on LGBTQ (content),” shared Ery. “We’re really having at least once a month a film about LGBTQ. May sarili (siyang) site dun (it has its own section in the website).”
Available online information about the streaming platform says that it presents exciting and fearless content for movie enthusiasts, and among its missions are to empower creators and bring original stories “that challenge the status quo and ignite curiosity.”
According to Ery, Star SineMax had a soft launch last year in September, and it is now available in Japan and the Philippines. Hopefully, it will reach kababayan abroad in territories like Saudi Arabia.
The movies, on the other hand, feature established, familiar stars and aspiring ones. The talents of Ai-Ai delas Alas, Jeric Gonzales, Arnell Ignacio, Mon Confiado, Pokwang, Mark Herras, Boobay, Yasser Marta and Herlene Budol are showcased in them.
Star SineMax through Ery had already spoken to ABS-CBN and GMA to tap the latter’s talents. The streaming platform is another avenue for actors and actresses to further display their craft and creativity. It’s also going to boost the local movie industry.
“Naniniwala po kasi ako sa storya… sa genre, (katulad ng) sinabi ko na LGBTQ. (I believe in the story and the genre, like what I’ve said, the LGBTQ content),” shared Ery about how Star SineMax will differentiate itself from others.
As a brief introduction of herself, she shared that she’s a Filipina who went to Japan 30 years ago and worked hard there.
“In fact, hindi naman po ako bago sa showbiz (I’m not new in the entertainment business),” said Ery. “Lagi po akong nagpapa-concerts (I would always mount concerts), and then meron din po akong ‘Tanghalan ng Kampeon’ Japan... may franchise ako for Japan (I also have the ‘Tanghalan ng Kampeon’ franchise there).”
“Tanghalan ng Kampeon” is the singing talent competition segment of “TiktoClock,” the GMA one-of-a-kind countdown variety show.
And Star SineMax is her first venture into a movie streaming platform.
