Ogie Alcasid opens up on proud dad moments, wife Regine’s ‘comeback’

Ogie Alcasid couldn’t be happier with the timing of his upcoming concert, “DADDYOKIE,” which has turned into a Father’s Day celebration for fellow dads.
During the press interview for the show, the singer-songwriter shared that the idea came about after they realized the concert dates would fall on Father’s Day weekend.
“Nung nagpapa-plano kami ng concert, yan yung dates na nabigay sa amin. And tamang-tama, Father’s Day weekend pala ‘to. Naisip ko lang, gawin nating Father’s Day weekend concert. That’s why it’s called ‘DADDYOKIE,’” he said.
Unlike his usual shows, Ogie said “DADDYOKIE” will not be built mainly around his own hits, which will only be “a very small part” of the repertoire.
Instead, the concert will feature songs that dads of his generation grew up singing and partying to.
“Yung mga songs ko, very small part pa lang siya. So it’s a repertoire na yung mga kinakanta naming mga daddies ng ‘80s,” he said.
He added, “Daddy songs style lang. Yung nung nagpa-party kami nung bata, ito yung mga kinakanta. Ang concern po dito is it’s okay for all the daddies to celebrate it. Of course, at the same time, natural acts muna tayo. We deserve this day.”
The “daddy” theme also led Ogie to reflect on his own life as a father, especially now that his and Regine Velasquez’s son Nate is growing up.
He shared that his wife has been emotional about Nate slowly becoming less of the little boy they used to know.
“Sobra siyang emotional kay Nate because I think ito na, hindi na baby talaga,” he said. “Medyo baby pa rin naman siya kumilos pero totoo lang, ngayon binata na ‘di ba? Yung nagpapa-kiss, sa anit na.”
According to Ogie, Regine even had to remind Nate that although he is growing up, they still miss the closeness they had with him as a child.
“Sabi niya kay Nate, ‘Alam mo, sana huwag mong kalimutan na we’re still your parents and we still miss you,’” the producer-host related.
Still, Ogie said he and Regine are blessed because Nate is a good child.
“Napakabait,” he stressed.
But when it comes to discipline, Ogie admitted that Regine is the stricter parent at home.
“I think forever na si Regine ang bad cop kasi siya talaga yung nagdi-disiplina,” he said.
“I think natatakot sila sa akin. Medyo masama ako magalit eh, but hindi na ako nagagalit ever. But I think si Nate, pag nagsalita na ako…”
Nevertheless, he believes that discipline is something parents should not delay. He said children need to understand early what is right and wrong and that actions have consequences.
“Kapag ang anak mo, sa edad na five to around 11, hindi mo nadisiplina, medyo naghihirap na balikan pa. So really those years, kailangan dini-discipline mo sila,” he said.
“At the same time, what is good and the bad and that there are consequences of things that you do that are not right.”
Ogie also shared a proud father moment when Nate recently told him that he had joined a play.
“Sabi niya sa akin, ‘Mom, Dad, I’m in a play.’ Sabi ko, ‘Ha? Umaarte ka, anak?’” he recalled. “Sabi ko, ‘Kakanta ka ba?’ ‘No, actor ako dito.’”
Later on, Nate also auditioned for a musical.
“Next, he said, ‘Nag-audition ako. I have a part in a musical.’ ‘Kumakanta ka na?’ ‘Oo.’ So, nanood kami,” he said.
Like any proud father, Ogie could not help but appreciate his son’s talent and efforts.
“Siyempre lahat talaga ng mga tatay sasabihin na pinakamagaling anak nila, no? Pero siya talaga pinakamagaling,” he said. “Sobrang natuwa kami but at the same time, nakikita namin na gusto niya yung ginagawa.”
Aside from being a father, Ogie also spoke about his role as husband to Regine, who is preparing for her own major concert.
Asked about their conversations at home, Ogie jokingly described himself as Regine’s “trainer” but clarified that he meant he’s been helping her with the physical preparation.
“Ako kasi (as the) trainer niya, it’s like, ‘Mag-aaral tayo ha, ilalakad na tayo, mag-gym na tayo,’ ganyan. Yun ang role ko,” he said.
He added that he is happy to see Regine in good form vocally.
“I’m so happy because her voice is really good now. Okay na okay voice niya,” he said, adding that they sought treatment for her voice but that Regine should be the one to talk about the details herself.
Ogie said voices naturally change with age, including his own. But in Regine’s case, he believes her voice now carries even more emotion and meaning.
“When we get older, our voices change. Like ako, hindi ko na naaabot yung mga naaabot ko nung bata ako,” he said.
“When you’re younger, you’re able to sing as high as you could, but now you have a voice that has so much emotion.”
Of Regine, he added, “It’s still there, but it has more purpose.”
He also revealed that Regine is also working on a new album, saying he has been listening to the songs every day.
“Sorry honey ha, sinasabi ko na,” he quipped. “Pinapakinggan namin araw-araw. Grabe, ang gaganda ng mga kanta.”
