BI: Scam hubs target Fil-Ams
MANILA, Philippines — Scam hub operators are reportedly targeting Filipino Americans, according to the Bureau of Immigration (BI).
Citing information from trafficked Filipinos repatriated from Myanmar, BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said Filipino migrants in the United States are being targeted by scam hubs.
Cryptocurrency scammers are contacting Filipino Americans on social media to persuade them to invest in fraudulent accounts.
Fake profits were shown to victims to lure them into investing more money. Fraudsters disappeared with the funds and victims were unable to withdraw their supposed earnings.
“The IACAT (Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking) is working to ensure that those who continue to victimize Filipinos face the harshest penalties of the law,” Viado said.
The National Bureau of Investigation recently arrested an alias Jon Jon, who was among those repatriated on March 26.
He allegedly helped develop the new module targeting Filipino Americans. The suspect pretended to be a victim despite being a recruiter of several illegal workers.
