Kanlaon continues spewing ash

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island has been showing increased activity since Sunday and spewed grayish ash plumes that rose 500 meters above the crater yesterday morning.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded four ash emissions that started at 5:57 a.m. yesterday and drifted southwest.
On Monday, Kanlaon started spewing ash at 3:24 p.m., which produced thick ash plumes that rose 1,500 meters above the summit crater.
Phivolcs said ashfall events were reported in Sitio Guintubdan in Barangay Araal, La Carlota City.
The Office of Civil Defense advised residents of the cities of Bago and La Carlota as well as neighboring areas to expect ashfall.
As of midnight of March 31, Phivolcs had recorded 23 volcanic quakes, including a tremor that lasted seven minutes and was accompanied by a sulfur dioxide flux.
The volcano has been under Alert Level 3 since it erupted in December.
