HONOLULU — The latest on tsunami advisories that were issued for Hawaii and parts of California after a powerful earthquake off Chile (all times local):

8:50 a.m.

A tsunami advisory has been dropped for Hawaii after a powerful earthquake off Chile, but it remains in effect for parts of coastal California.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center dropped the Hawaii advisory Thursday morning.

Officials originally issued a more serious tsunami watch for the state shortly after Wednesday's magnitude-8.3 earthquake. But they later downgraded it to an advisory, saying no major tsunami was expected.

The National Weather Service says a 3-foot wave was recorded at Hilo Harbor on Hawaii's Big Island shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday. Forecaster Tom Birchard says he hasn't heard of any significant impacts.

The National Tsunami Warning Center says an advisory remains in effect for Ragged Point, California and San Onofre State Beach, California.

Authorities in California are calling on people to refrain from waterfront activities.
