Brgy resident jailed for election offense

HILONGOS, LEYTE, Philippines  â€” A resident of a barangay in this town was sentenced to a minimum of one year imprisonment after the court found him guilty of falsifying his application for voter’s registration during the 2007 barangay and SK elections.

The convicted man, Rodrigo Sambayon Baroto was accused of violating the Omnibus Election Code when he made false statements regarding his residency.

Baroto applied for transfer of registration from Barangay Cacao to Barangay Cantandog II when he was already a resident for a year in the latter barangay. He did not give any reason for falsely stating the facts in his voter’s application, according to the court.

Another Cantandog resident however testified that Baroto was never a resident of this barangay, prompting the court to declare that the latter was inconsistent with his statement, affecting his credibility and qualification as a voter in that locality. (FREEMAN)
