Nicknames

NAMES. It is the practice of Pinoys in the US to Americanize their names like Macario to Max or Mackie, Amado to Madz, Renato to Natch or Renz,Panfilo to Phil, etc. Sometimes they forget their real Pinoy names that they get into some problem with the US Immigration.

KANOS. Not to be outdone are some Americans residing in the Philippines (where they're known as Kano or Kanos) who have adopted Pinoy nicknames. Stevenson who runs a bakery in a city in Negros Occidental has adopted the nickname Binoy while Gregory who operates a car/truck shop in Iloilo City is known to neighbors as Gorio or Goring.

SO WHAT? So what's in a name? "Not much really," says a professor in behavioral science. "But the nicknames make the original name owners feel at home in their adopted neighborhoods."
