It is the formerly unnamed street located at the Doña Esperanza Osmeña Subdivision in Labangon, Cebu City. It is an interior street passing along Tres de Abril Street, turning right before reaching the Cebu Institute of Technology.
The street is named in honor of a city official who was shot to death on the evening of September 5, 1988. That was 25 years ago, while manning traffic at the corner of Colon and P. Lopez Streets, Cebu City. Shot at about 10 o'clock in the evening, well beyond his official tour of duty. He was then CITOM chief, an office created under City Ordinance No. 1264 enacted on October 19, 1987, entitled "Cebu City Traffic Management Coordination Committee."
Eddie, fondly called by friends as "Eddie Boy," sacrificed his time and energy as well as his life in the service of his fellow Cebuanos, a very rare attribute which should be modeled by all government officials.
Eddie, finished his elementary at the Colegio del Santo Niño. His High School at the Colegio de San Jose Recoletos and college at the University of the Visayas. Ironically he was shot at the corner of the streets of his Alma Mater (CSJR now USJR at P. Lopez St. and UV at Colon). The High School Department of USJR used to be at the Main Campus until it was transferred to the Basak Campus in 1983.
Eddie was born on November 19, 1946 and would have been 70 this year. He was the son of spouses Lazaro Mabida Jabonero and Angelina Gelig Fernan. He married Geraldine Borromeo Jabonero and had the following children: Diane, Dale, Edward, and Denise, who are now in the United States of America.
A month after his death, the Cebu City Council on motion of Councilor Eleno V. Abellana on October 10, 1988 enacted City Ordinance No. 1305 naming an unnamed street in honor of Eduardo Jabonero.
The vice mayor at that time was Alvin B. Garcia, the members of the council were Rodolfo V. Cabrera, Franklin N. Seno, Vicente A. Kintanar Jr., Eleno V. Abellana, Clemente G. Rama, Jessie M. Aznar, Ruben C. dela Cerna, Manuel L. Concepcion, Procopio E. Fernandez, Rosendo G. Martinez, Renato V. Osmeña, Avenescio A. Piramide, Arnulfo R. Ravina, and Joy A. G. Young.
The ordinance was approved by then Mayor Tomas R. Osmeña on October 14, 1998. The City Council Secretary was Pompio A. Paradiang.
