Paulo G. Almendras Street

It is the street from Gochan Subdivision in Mabolo running parallel to San Jose dela Montaña (now Pope John Paul II Avenue), intersecting S. Cabahug (Sotero Cabahug) and F. Cabahug (Fructuoso Cabahug) Streets.

The City Council on motion of Councilor Pablo U. Abella approved City Ordinance No. 940 on June 14, 1976 naming the street in honor of a Cebuano who distinguished himself during his lifetime.

Paulo, was born in then Municipality of Danao, now City of Danao, on January 25, 1893 had established residence in Cebu City.

He served as Municipal Councilor of Danao in 1916, as its Vice President in 1919 and, from 1919 until 1940, as President and as Municipal Mayor, having remained undefeated in local politics.

His children: Alejandro, Jovenal, Cecilia, Priscillano and Josefino likewise excelled in their respective fields of endeavor, having served our people in various capacities with success and distinction.

Alejandro, was elected Governor of Davao in 1951 and became a Senator in 1955 until 1972. Meanwhile, Jovenal was elected Representative of the old 1st District of Cebu from 1946 to 1949. The wife of Paulo, named Elisea, was the older sister of the late Rep. Ramon “Manoy Amon” Durano.
