If you are reading this editorial today, December 21, 2012 or 12-21-12, then it must only be because of one thing -- the world did not end as people feared, based on how they interpreted the Mayan calendar's end.
And if the world did not end, it is not because it never will but because no one, not the Mayans, not Nostradamus, not even Psy of Gangnam Style, can truly say when. The end is something only God can say when.
The problem is, God is telling no one when the world will end. In His infinite wisdom, God probably thought people driven to desperation with the knowledge of impending doom might be prone to do even crazier things than they already are doing.
Instead, God only tells people to prepare for the end. Again, in His infinite wisdom, God must have deduced that people driven to fear by impending doom but not to desperation by knowing exactly when, might become more prayerful and better persons as they wait.
So, if the world does end today just as you finish reading this editorial, it is because God willed it to be so, and not because a bunch of people said so, like the Mayans, who were not even able to predict their own extinction.
But let us remain hopeful that God will continue to delay the inevitable, that this generation and the generations of our children and their children will continue to experience the delaying tactics of God.
There is something beautiful and beneficial in the delaying tactics of God. It allows all of creation the chance to savor and enjoy life as God envisioned life on His earth to be savored and enjoyed.
But since God gave us the free will to make our life's choices, we can also choose to go against God's will. We can even take our chances with the rest of what He has created, such as the environment, tinkering with it to hasten what God has laboriously tried to stall and delay.
