Talisay City’s Colis street to undergo drainage makeover

CEBU, Philippines – The Department of Public Works and Highways Second Engineering District will undertake the drainage improvement at Colis Street to put an end to the flooding problems near the Tabunok Public Market in Talisay City.

Mayor Johnny De los Reyes yesterday said the problem of swamps of murky water beside the market will not be resolved if city government and the DPWH will point fingers to each other.

"The problem will not be solved if we keep on blaming," De los Reyes said, adding that he was aware of the complaints of the market-goers and residents who have noticed the stagnant waters.

Recently, the DPWH said the drainage problem on Colis Street is local in origin since there is no national drainage system that connects to the drainage in the area.

District Engineer Daisy Toledo pointed out that waters are not swamping the national roads because national drainage system in the area was designed for the roads and not for the structure within the vicinity.

But De los Reyes said he already talked with the DPWH pleading that they will undertake the project without the city government's allocation.

"Mihangyo ta nga pwede ba sila maoy mo-trabaho and they promised to us that by next year ilang trabahuon kay padak-an nila ang drainage dihang dapita," the mayor added.

Early this year, two men died after attempting to clean a clogged drainage in the area.
