Carcar to honor homegrown clan of artists

CEBU, Philippines - Saying Carcar City stands as the center of culture and the arts in southern Cebu, Mayor Nicepuro Apura is giving recognition to one of the city's most renowned clans of musicians and artists.

Apura said the city will pay tribute to the Abellana clan, particularly Martino, Ramon and Sindulfo Alcoseba-Abellana, by way of converting one of the rooms in the Carcar City Museum into an Abellana Room. Ramon, Martino and Sindulfo are brothers.

"The room will feature the paintings of Martino Abellana, recognized as the 'dean of Cebuano painters.' It will also feature the sculptures of the famous Dr. Ramon Abellana. His famous works are the Carcar City Rotunda, the Sergio Osmeña Sr. and Lapu-Lapu at the Provincial Capitol, Humabon in Plaza Hamabar, and another statue of Don Sergio Osmeña Sr.," the mayor said.

"The room will also house some of the works of Sindulfo," Apura added.

It will be inaugurated this morning and will be open to the public during regular museum hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Apura said the exhibit will not be a permanent fixture of the museum since the art pieces will be loaned from the families of the artists.

He said the city will be "greatly proud of them" since Martino, known as "Noy Tinong," was a renowned Cebuano painter while Ramon was famous in composing music.

Sindulfo, a sculptor was famous with his works that include the San Mateo and San Pedro in the St. Catherine de Alexandria Church in Carcar City, the baptism area inside the church and the Carcar seal. He also collaborated with his brothers in the making of the Carcar City Rotunda.

Carcar was established as a municipality in 1599, and later upgraded into a city in 2007. (FREEMAN)
