Murky water issue: DPWH to Talisay: Improve Tabunok market drainage

CEBU, Philippines - The district engineer of the Department of Public Works and Highways second engineering district which includes Talisay city yesterday said the lack of the city’s drainage plan has caused the flooding of stagnant water beside the Tabunok public market.

District Engineer Daisy Toledo said the problem of swamps of murky water right beside the Tabunok public market will continue if the Talisay city government will not improve the drainage in the city.

Toledo said city officials cannot point their fingers on the DPWH because the problem is local in origin. She said there is no national drainage system which connects to the drainage in the area.

“The problem there is local in nature. It’s the drainage problem of the market of the city and it is not part of our national plan,” Toledo said. â€They should start with the plan and look for the drainage system of the market.”

Toledo also pointed out that waters are not swamping the national roads because national drainage system in the area was designed for the roads, and not for the structures within the vicinity.

Market-goers and residents who shop at the Tabunok public market have noticed the stagnant water which already turned murky.

Turo Abarquez, who resides in sitio Mananga II in barangay Tabunok, said the road has already been mistaken as canal because it has already been covered with dark water. â€”/JRS (FREEMAN)
