CEBU, Philippines - Talisay City State College President Richel Bacaltos yesterday said he has heard about the end of his tenure as head of the community college.
“That is true. I am aware of moves seeking to replace me,†Bacaltos told The Freeman.
But Bacaltos said the decision to remove him from his post will come from the majority of the Talisay City College Board of Trustees.
The board of trustees is comprised of the mayor, a college administrator, city council chairman of the committee on education, city council chairman of the committee on budget and appropriation, Department of Education-City Division head, president of the Cebu Technical University, president of the Cebu Normal University, Office of Cebu first district Representative Gerald Anthony “Samsam†Gullas, and the city treasurer.
Bacaltos said if the board of trustees decides to replace him, he will step down.
“If the board decides, there will be no problem. I will step down. Kahibalo naman ko niana kay mao man na ang naa sa ordinance creating the city college,†Bacaltos, who started to serve as president last July, said.
The college was the brainchild of former congressman Eduardo Gullas, Samsam’s grandfather, when he was mayor.
The city ordinance creating it was approved in 2004.
It opened its gates to students in June 2004.
Among the legacies left behind by former Rep. Eduardo Gullas is the conversion of Talisay City College into Talisay City State College.
The law is a landmark, said Gullas, as it is a first for a community college to be converted into a state college and admitted into the country’s state university and college system.
As such, the Talisay City State College will be fully subsidized by the national government.
The conversion to state college would free the Talisay City government from spending for the operation and maintenance of the educational facility. – (FREEMAN)
