CEBU, Philippines - A Navy officer was shot dead Tuesday evening outside of a hotel at Dimataga Street, Barangay Poblacion, Lapu-Lapu City.
Petty Officer 2 Edwin Liyogan, 38, married, of Kamuning Street, Quezon City did not reach the Lapu-Lapu City District Hospital alive. He was shot in the head.
His assailant, according to witnesses, attempted to fire a second shot but the gun failed to discharge.
Police said Liyogan was to meet a woman that night at the hotel.
Witnesses said Liyogan appeared restless at the time, having gone in and out of the hotel, apparently waiting for the woman who did not show up.
While outside of the hotel, a man came up to him from behind and fired once at his head.
Police, which found Liyogan’s wallet with P71,000 in it and a cellular phone, have discounted robbery as the motive for the killing.
They instead suspect a love triangle involving a woman and two men.
The woman’s name that appears in text messages in Liyogan’s phone is “Jencev.â€
Police suppose the killer, the woman’s partner, used the woman’s phone to contact Liyogan.
Police also said Liyogan arrived in Cebu City from Davao City last November.
He was supposed to be back in Davao after the Sinulog. (FREEMAN)
