CEBU, Philippines – Bayfront Hotel Cebu scored a 69-67 upset over last year's runner-up Cebu Landmasters in the continuing action of the 20th Sacred Heart Ateneo Alumni Basketball Athletic Association (SHAABAA) Cup last Sunday at the Magis Eagles gym at Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City.
Elddie Cabahug sparkled with 18 points, while Antonio Datan and Raymond Basenio chipped in 14 and 12 markers, respectively, as Bayfront Hotel evened its record to 5-5 in a tie with its victim.
Bayfront Hotel used a strong opening assault, 22-12, then gamely rebuffed every comeback attempt by the Cebu Landmasters in the windup to escape with a two-point thriller.
Kyle Valmoria and Borgy de la Cruz each scored 16, while Moncrief Rogado tallied 12 points in a losing effort for the Cebu Landmasters.
In the other game, Eman Malazarte had 14 points as Gaisano Capital trounced Filmon Prince Medallion, 74-42, to stay at solo third in Division A with a 6-4 win-loss record.
Jerry Seno netted 12 points, while Jazper Diaz and Enrico Solon nailed 11 points apiece for Gaisano Capital, which clobbered the hapless Filmon from the start to come up with a 32-point blowout.
Luis Yu was the lone double-digit scorer with 10 for Filmon, which joined Chick@Phil Basic at the bottom of the standings with only one win to show in 10 games. — EBV (FREEMAN)
