CEBU, Philippines - It may take him at least an hour and a half to play golf at Alta Vista Golf and Country Club coming from Toledo City where he lives, but this was no hindrance for Avelino ‘Jun’ Zambo, Jr. to rule the October Monthly Medal played last Saturday.
Zambo fired identical nines of 39 strokes for a gross six-over-par 78 strokes to bag the lowest gross honors for the premiere handicap category of the 18-hole strokeplay event.
The lowest net honors for class A went to teenager Anton Pastoriza, who fired two-under-par 70 strokes off a gross of 79. Wendell Yap finished as runner-up with his net score of 71 strokes.
Roy Damole led the winners under class B with a lowest gross performance of 82 strokes off nines of 39 and 43 strokes.
The lowest net honors for this handicap category went to Lino Dagus with 70 strokes off a gross score of 88. Runner-up honors went to Benjie Hortelano with a net score of 71 strokes edging Oliver Kim in the countback.
Mar Selma won the lowest gross honors for class C shooting 95 strokes and beating Robert Lim in the countback by virtue of a better total for his last six holes.
The lowest net plum went to James Tan with 67 strokes off a gross score of 96. Lim settled to the runner-up honors with his net score of 69.
Club treasurer Ramon Sebastian ruled the seniors’ category by taking the lowest gross plum shooting six-over-par 78 strokes on nines of 37 and 41 strokes.
The lowest net honors went to Cesar Salimbangon with 67 strokes off a gross score of 85. Club director Vicente Go settled for the runner-up honors with his net score of 71 edging Manuel Zosa, Jr. in the countback.
Ely Celestino bagged the lowest gross honors for the superseniors’ class, which is for players aged 70 years old and above. He fired 86 strokes.
The lowest net plum for the group went to Ed Sanchez with 65 strokes edging Justice Pampio Abarintos in the countback.
Teenager Alyeska Yunam showed a lot of class firing a tournament-best three-over-par 75 strokes to rule the ladies’ division.
The lowest net honors for the distaff side went to Gina Yap with 68 strokes off a gross score of 96.
The lowest gross honors for the guest division went to Byung Jin with 77 strokes while the lowest net plum went to Willy Enciso with with 76 strokes.
Zambo also took home the special award for nearest to the pin on hole No. 6 where he left 4 feet and 11 inches for a birdie.
