SWU downs SHS-Ateneo in CESAFI volleyball semis

CEBU, Philippines - Southwestern University (SWU) bested Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in three sets to move one win away from advancing into the secondary girls volleyball finals of the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) season the other night at the Aznar Coliseum.

SWU's conquest of SHS-AdC did not come in handy as it has to recover from a first-set debacle before scraping through a 22-25, 25-9, 25-12 victory.

The SWU girls gun for a semis sweep that would earn them an outright championship berth as they clash with the University of San Carlos (USC) at 1 pm today still at Azco.

In the women's collegiate division, the Cebu Doctors' University (CDU) dealt the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) its second straight semifinal loss in four sets.

CDU took the first set, 25-17, but USPF fired back in the ensuing frame, 25-20, to even the count at 1-1. However, the galloping Stallions of CDU pummeled USPF in the next two sets 25-12, 25-14 for the kill.

CDU hopes to pad its lead when it tackles USJ-R today, while USPF hopes to barge into the win column as it battles the topseeded SWU in the main game. (FREEMAN)
