CEBU, Philippines - Defending champion Hiroshi FC bounced back with a 6-1 rout of Don Bosco United to stay in contention in the men's open division of the 13th Cebu Inter-club Football Cup at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.
Rodney Gandiongco spewed fire from the get-go on the way to punch in four goals for Hiroshi. After breaking the ice of the match at the 26th, Gandiongco further went on a scoring binge at the 48th, 67th and 79th to fluster the Bosconians. Roy Melgo and Antony Falkhanes drilled in Hiroshi’s other goals at the 51st and 60th.
Val Calvo, who is now with Ateneo de Manila University, handed his former school Don Bosco its only goal at the 69th.
Hiroshi, thus, jumped back on top of the group B standings alongside Samba with two wins and a draw. Samba got its second win at the expense of host Cebu Amateur Football Club, 4-2.
In group A, ERCO now trails the front-running Queen City United after pulling off a 6-2 victory over Hijos del Pueblo.
The presence of Philippine Azkals skipper Chiffy Caligdong spelled big difference for ERCO. He nailed five of ERCO’s six goals at the 7th, 33rd, 43rd, 55th and 68th.
The other goal came was delivered by Raffy Abano at the 41st.
ERCO also got off to a good start in the 40-above class courtesy of a 5-1 drubbing of JEH United.
In the 18-under division,Springdale FC opened its bid with a 3-0 win against Pocket Monster.
Over at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Brgy. Subangdaku, Mandaue City, KN Ferraren outsmarted SJS-M, 3-2, while the University of San Carlos and Ateneo de Cebu set up a championship showdown in the ladies open. (FREEMAN)
