CEBU, Philippines - The vaunted spikers from the cities of Talisay and Carcar struck back-to-back wins in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup the other day at the Cebu International Convention Center.
Talisay, the defending champion in the men's division, claimed its second straight victory with a 25-17, 25-19 trouncing of Bantayan.
Last year’s runner-up Liloan also got off to a flying start courtesy of a 25-14, 25-12 whacking of Ronda.
Talisay, thus, perched atop the group A leaderboard with a clean 2-0 slate followed by Asturias and Liloan. Bantayan and Ronda are at the bottom of the standings without win in two starts.
In group B, Carcar enjoyed the solo lead with a 2-0 card.
Carcar sustained its sizzling run with a masterful 25-16, 25-17 triumph over Sta. Fe, which lost its opening assigment by default to Toledo City.
Mandaue, on the other hand, opened its campaign with a 25-18, 25-16 thrashing of Moalboal.
The semifinal round in the men's division as well as in the women's and kiddies categories will be played on December 21. All championship games will be played the following day.
