Mandaue trounces Alegria in GUV Cup q’finals

CEBU, Philippines -  Defending women’s open champion Mandaue City hurdled its opening assignment against Alegria with relative ease in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup yesterday at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC).

Powered by an all-star cast, Mandaue dismantled Alegria in straight sets, 25-8, 25-10.

Over in group B, Minglanilla sets the early pace with back-to-back wins. After crushing Tabuelan, 25-8, 25-15, the Minglanilla belles need not to break even a single sweat against a no-show Bantayan squad.

Two other squads in the women’s category did not show up for their respective games- Ginatilan and Moalboal.

In the other women's play, Catmon pulled off a 25-9, 25-15 victory over Alegria, while last year's runner-up Talisay slammed Toledo, 25-14, 25-9 to share the lead with Sta. Fe and Liloan in their group. Santa Fe won by default over Ginatilan, while Liloan whacked Tabogon, 25-9, 25-8.

The quarterfinal round will run until December 17. The quarterfinals of the kiddies division will be on Dec. 14-16, while the next stage of the men’s bracket will commence on December 17 yet.

The semifinal phase will be on the 21st, while the championship round will be on December 21. (FREEMAN)
