CEBU, Philippines - Elmer Navarro emerged as the biggest winner, even as fellow Cebuano rider Roy Carbonera stole part of the show in yesterday’s Cebu Challenge Mountainbike One Day Road Race from the city of Talisay to Tuburan and back.
Aside from dominating the second and final stage, Navarro, a member of Team LBC, was also crowned as ‘King of the Mountain’ in the cash-rich cycling race organized by Cebu Sports Hall of Famer David “Kuya Boy” Odilao, Jr.
Navarro topped stage 2 covering over 70 kilometers in two hours, 38 minutes and 40 seconds.
Randy Carbonera wound up second followed by Marvin Tapic, IK Robles and Jaybop Pagnanawon.
Nilo Barbalose and Christian Cabonita grabbed part of the limelight after ruling stage 1 and 2 in the senior and junior division, respectively.
Randy’s brother Roy Carbonera won the elite open’s stage 1 with the time of 2:38:40, thanks to early leader Marvin Tapic who figured in a crash after he made a sudden turn going into the finish line.
Marvin Vinan finished second in stage 1, while Tapic wound up third. The next two spots were occupied by Junvie Pagnanawon fourth and John Renee Mier, the early favorite who failed to get the top spot in any of the stages as he just borrowed a mountainbike for this event.
In the executive division, Harry Jumamoy lorded it over in stage 1, while Dr. Jonathan Simbajon wrested the champion’s trophy in stage 1. Kenneth Reservaans came out the fastest among the fat boys entries. (FREEMAN)
