CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu Provincial Board is urging the local government units to see to it that there are no Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) in their respective areas.

This, after the board approved a resolution expressing support for a total ban on POGOs as declared by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during his State of the Nation Address last July 22.

“I am calling all the local officials and even the citizenry for that matter, if they found something or notice something they should report it,” said Board Member Cesar “Sarsi”, who authored the said resolution.

Baricuatro said that this resolution serves a precautionary measure for the LGUs especially as POGOs have been operating in the country, perhaps even in Cebu.

“Alam mo naman ang POGO na tago-tago ‘yan eh and these local government units, they should be vigilant regarding this,” said Baricuatro.

Baricuatro, said that the LGUs in the province should check for possible POGOs in their areas.

“Kasi mahirap yung nandiyan na eh, kagaya ngayon nagkakagulo dahil sa POGO, madaming nadadamay tapos kailangan lang talaga na ang ating mga local government ay well-versed para kung meron man silang napapansin makita agad,” he said.

He also said this resolution is essential to know if there might be LGU officials actually involved in POGOs.

“Baka may mga local officials na involved, money talks ‘yan ay it’s a big money, mahirap na yan kapag pera na,” said Baricuatro.

Last July, President Marcos instructed the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. to wind down and cease the operation of POGOs by the end of the year. He also ordered the Department of Labor to look for new jobs for Filipinos affected by the ban.

According to National Economic and Development Authority, the contribution of POGO investment to the Philippines economy is minimal compared to the social ills caused by the POGO-linked crimes.

“While we welcome foreign investments, the same should be legitimate businesses that will facilitate knowledge and skills transfer, provide quality jobs for all Cebuanos and bring forth good to the province as an investment hub and a tourist destination,” read a portion of the resolution. — (FREEMAN)
