Viscom cites peace initiatives for ‘success’

CEBU, Philippines — The Visayas Command (Viscom) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has credited various peace initiatives of local government units (LGUs) and communities as a factor in its successful security effort in Central Visayas.

During the third quarter "Viscom Multi-Sector Advisory Board” (MSAB) meeting, Viscom also assured that it would sustain its campaign for peace in the Visayas regions.

"Our security effort is doing well, and we should continue this trend, as Viscom is not only on the forefront of the AFP's campaign in the Visayas region but also one at the top...in terms of accomplishments," said Lieutenant General Benedict Arevalo, Viscom commander.

As of the third quarter of 2023, Viscom said it "neutralized" 79 New People's Army members and seized 110 firearms and 25 anti-personnel mines.

This success, Viscom said, is the result of the support and collaboration by the community and the LGUs that carried out various peace initiatives.

Part of the peace initiatives is the implementation of the Barangay Development Program, where up to 569 community development projects were successfully implemented throughout the Visayas.

They also include projects like the construction of potable water systems, farm to market roads, and barangay health centers.

These projects helped in the development of better living conditions for the people, particularly those in remote communities, and also provided them with livelihood opportunities.

"We thank you for your participation, as we appreciate the things that you have been doing for VISCOM. You give us inspiration and motivation to do better in this part of our country," said Arevalo.

Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, Viscom MSAB chairperson, also expressed the archdiocese's strong support for VISCOM's programs for peace.

Meanwhile, the Police Regional Office (PRO)-7 assured it would monitor and provide security in the transportation of paraphernalia meant for the Oct. 30 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

This way, said Police Lt. Col. Gerard Ace Pelare, PRO-7 spokesperson, the paraphernalia would arrive safely at their intended places.

It is expected that the ballots, indelible inks, and other election paraphernalia will arrive in Central Visayas on Oct. 17 and 18.

“Basta ang role sa PNP is just to make sure nga safe and pag-transport and no untoward incidents,” Pelare said.

He said they would also strictly follow the guidelines, like maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle carrying the election paraphernalia.

“In fact, if I can recall, in the previous elections, there were authorizations to be given by the BEI (Board of Election Inspectors) para makasulod ang PNP because the PNP always and strictly adheres to neutrality during elections,” Pelare said. — (FREEMAN)
