BFP-7 boosts fire response plans amid El Nino threat
CEBU, Philippines — The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-7 is strengthening its contingency plans to address possible water shortages during firefighting operations and improve coordination with local government units (LGUs), communities and the media to promote public safety.
BFP-7 Regional Director Fire Chief Supt. Rodulfo Denaga said fire stations are identifying alternative water sources, including rivers, swimming pools and other available local sources, that firefighters can tap during major fires.
Fire trucks and water tankers may also be deployed, while firefighters are prepared to conduct water abstraction when necessary.
Denaga stressed the importance of LGU support in identifying alternative water sources and augmenting the firefighting capabilities of local fire stations.
He also urged local governments not to underestimate the value of their locally procured firefighting units, particularly during the early stages of a fire.
“Ang importansya ng firefighting natin is yung makarating agad doon sa nasusunog na mga gusali at makapag-introduce ng cooling effect,” Denaga said.
He explained that smaller firefighting units can reach barangays and narrow streets more quickly, allowing firefighters to cool burning structures immediately and help prevent fires from spreading.
These units are intended to complement, rather than replace, the BFP’s firefighting resources.
The bureau also stressed the need for appropriate firefighting equipment in areas vulnerable to grass and forest fires, particularly during periods of extreme heat.
Meanwhile, BFP-7 underscored the importance of strengthening its partnership with the media to promote fire prevention, emergency preparedness and public safety.
In a message delivered during the induction of the BFP-7 Press Corps officers and members, led by ABS-CBN’s Annie Perez Gallardo as president, the bureau emphasized that public safety is a shared responsibility requiring cooperation among government agencies, local communities and media organizations.
Denaga said responsible reporting helps disseminate fire prevention campaigns, emergency advisories and safety information while correcting misinformation and encouraging the public to take precautions before disasters strike.
He also emphasized that timely and accurate information during emergencies helps people understand risks and respond appropriately.
Denaga called for stronger cooperation with the press based on mutual respect, professionalism, transparency and accountability. He stressed that a productive media partnership should allow honest dialogue and constructive criticism.
The newly inducted BFP-7 Press Corps officers and members were urged to serve as a bridge between the bureau and their communities and help promote greater public understanding of the agency’s mandate.
BFP-7 reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening public information initiatives and collaboration with media practitioners to advance fire safety, emergency preparedness and the protection of lives and property.
