CEBU, Philippines — The Danao City government is giving emphasis to culture and heritage as it will soon build a museum called the “Museo de Danao.”
The museum, according to the city government, will house artifacts/relics, heirlooms, and other items that speak of the city’s rich culture and heritage.
Phase 1 of the construction is expected to kick off this year.
The city government, through the City Tourism Council, is hoping that Danawanons can all work together in building the museum from sharing old photos, stories, and others of priceless cultural value.
The museum can function as a public library and will have space for skills workshop such as painting and pottery-making. It will also house the Danao City Tourism Office.
This two-storey 800 square meter area is located at the old police station. The location, which was the Spanish Municipal Site in the 1860s, had hosted the Danao Provincial High School and later the Danao City Police Station.
The city government said it is not only giving importance to culture and heritage but also to the environment, youth (Skate Park and Youth Center), open space (Plaza Beatriz Fountain), health (free programs), and economic (Danao City market and upcoming big ticket investments).
Earlier, after conducting investigations and consultations with experts from the University of San Carlos, the partial results of the Danao City’s Cultural Heritage Mapping confirmed that a relic found in the city is indeed a part of the Old Cebu Railway.
The railway served as a vital link between the main track and the coal mines in the mountainous areas of Danao City.
According to Danao City government, the presence of the coal wagon track showed the city’s abundance of coal resources during that time. — LPM (FREEMAN)
