Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Mandaue City will get P1.3 billion this year under the General Appropriations of 2023 for the implementation and completion of its flood control projects covering at least five barangays in the city.

The various flood control structures are aimed at reducing or preventing the detrimental effects of river overflows and flood waters. The projects will be constructed in the flood prone barangays in the city.

The entire segment of the Butuanon River would have projects totaling P830 million.

Of the P830 million, the segment of the Butuanon River situated in Barangay Alang-Alang will have a budget of P40 million, while the segment of the same river situated in Barangay Maguikay will have P220 million.

Another segment of the river traversing Barangay Tabok will have an allocation of P200 million and an additional P380 million is allocated for the other segments of the said river.

For another river systems, a flood control project at Basak Creek, in Barangay Basak will also be constructed with a budget of P250 million, and P60 million for a flood control structure in Jagobiao Creek.

Furthermore, a construction of flood mitigation structures along the Tipolo River will have an initial budget of P180 million.

Mandaue City had been placed under a state of calamity following the massive flooding last September 9, 2022 that affected 11 of its 27 barangays.

In a statement, Mandaue City Lone District Representative Emmarie “Lolypop” Ouano-Dizon said that she looks forward to the construction of these infra interventions in many segments of the Butuanon River which spans different barangays in Mandaue City.

She said during her discussion with Mayor Jonas Cortes last year she promised him to find resources for flood control projects that are seen to help solve the perennial flooding in the city.

“Kon dunay kusog nga uwan makamugna gyud ug baha sa atong palibut kon wala kitay maayo nga drainage system ug tungod sa pag-overflow sa atong manga sapa,” Ouano-Dizon said.

Other infrastructure projects implemented by Ouano-Dizon last year were the construction of roads with drainage in Barangays Umapad and Mantuyong, as well as the construction of flood control infrastructure along Butuanon River in Barangay Cabancalan.

The P1.3B worth of infrastructure projects will be implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways and is targeted to be completed within the year. — GAN (FREEMAN)
